I am thrilled to share that my article has been published with Childmindinguk.com, you can read full article by clicking here

In this article I explore how coaching and therapeutic approches can enhance childminding practice. These strategies help children develop emotional regulations, social skills, and confidance, while also supporting families to communicate effictively and manage challenges.

Coaching and Therapy: What's the Difference?

Coaching focuses on helping children and parents set goals, build confidance, and develop strategies to overcome challenges, whereas therapy adresses deeper emotional or psychological needs, providing a safe space to explore feelings, develop cognitive skills, and heal from past experiences.

Both approaches are powerful tools to enhance children's well-being and support families in everyday life.

Practical Implamentation in Childminding

As a childminder, I see firsthand how transitions like dropping-offs can be difficult for children and parents alike. Coaching and therapeutic techniques help:

  • Reasure and support parents during drop-offs
  • Help children express and manage emotions
  • Identify early signs of stress or behavioral challenges

We can use simple tools already in our settings, like sand trays, dolls, paints, and storytelling, to implament play therapy, narrative therapy, and sensory activities. These methods help children explore feelings, build resiliance, and develop social and communication skills.

Cultural Sensitivity and Inclusion

It is important to adapt coaching and therapeutic approches to respect cultural differences. For example, some children and families may interpret eye contact or emotional expression differently. Collaborating with families and undersranding unique needs ensures trully holistic support while upholding EYFS principles and British Values such as respect, inclusion and diversity.
